Mrs. JoAnne Camp Rhoden, age 83, of Roebuck, South Carolina, died Sunday afternoon, December 13, 2015, at Mary Black Hospital in Spartanburg, South Carolina, from complications from pneumonia.
Mrs. Rhoden was born on August 4, 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Jack L. Camp and Annie Mae (Whitmire) Camp of Atlanta, Georgia.
Mrs. Rhoden was a 1953 graduate of the University of Georgia and a member of the Alpha Omega Pi sorority. She worked as an educator in both the Atlanta and Toombs County School Systems, was a homemaker, and a member of Toombs County Retired Educators Association. She was also a longtime member of Lyons First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School to children, attended Mamie China’s Sunday School class, and was active in the Woman’s Missionary Union. In 2006, she moved to Roebuck, South Carolina, to live with her daughter, Luanne, and family. While she lived in Roebuck, she was an active member of Southside Baptist Church, Spartanburg.
Mrs. Rhoden is preceded in death by her husband, Harold M. Rhoden of Lyons, editor of The Lyons Progress weekly newspaper for many years.
Mrs. Rhoden is survived by her sons, Mark Rhoden and wife Linda of Byron, Georgia and Lester Rhoden of Lyons; and daughter, Luanne (Rhoden) Holton and husband Philip of Roebuck, South Carolina. She was affectionately known as “Oma” by her grandchildren Jim Rhoden and wife Janae, John Rhoden and wife Sarah, and Becky (Rhoden) Pearson and husband Matthew, and Annie Holton. In addition, she had two great-grandchildren, Alice Rhoden and Jared Rhoden, children of Jim and Janae.
Great-grandchild number three is due in February 2016 to John and Sarah.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 2:30 pm at Lyons First Baptist Church with Reverend Dannie Williams and Reverend David Blanton officiating. Interment will follow at Lyons City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 1:00 pm until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Lyons First Baptist Church.
