Edith Davidson Mathis of Savannah, Ga. died on June 4, 2018. She was born on September 18, 1917 in Chalybeate Springs, MS, where she met her best friend and husband of 56 years, Willis Mathis. She will be greatly missed by her children: Mary Mathis of Sun City Center, FL; Jim and Ruth Mathis of Rincon, GA; Kathy and Kevin O’Shea of McKinleyville, CA, as well as 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren.
In her 100 years, she brought much joy and laughter to a multitude of people. Never was there a person in whom she did not find good, a tree that wasn’t the most beautiful that she had ever seen, or an occasion that didn’t require either a cup of coffee or an ice cold Coke.
Edith had a full life of caring for her family: being a Cub Scout leader, a Girl Scout leader, involved in PTA and taking her grandchildren on countless hikes, afternoons of crabbing and trips to the beach. She especially loved her church, Isle of Hope Methodist, where she was a member since 1957. She played a vital part in the growth of this church, even opening her home up for Sunday School and as a place for brides to dress.
“Sweet Miss Edith” leaves a legacy of generosity, living life joyfully and appreciating the beauty of nature.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on June 16, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Isle of Hope Methodist Church in Savannah.
The Mathis family would like to convey our gratitude to all of the staff at Magnolia Manor by the Sea, Insignia of Savannah and Summers Landing of Vidalia for their loving care. Donations in her honor may be made to the youth Group of Isle of Hope Methodist Church 412 Parkersburg Road, Savannah, GA 31406 or Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society, 322 Saint Johns Road, Guyton, GA 31312.
